 Indian aviation industry to incur losses with decreasing revenue and growing costs in 2021-22.

To say that airlines have experienced turbulence in 2020 would be an understatement. Airlines have collectively lost $120 billion and counting in what is aviation's most challenging year. It is predicted the losses will worsen.

In 2021-22, the Indian aviation industry is expected to continue to incur major losses and IndiGo airlines will emerge significantly stronger than their competitors from the COVID-19 pandemic, said aviation consulting firm CAPA India on Monday.

The price of oil and the exchange rate are two of the key factors affecting the cost of operating an airline.

Although revenue remains under pressure, costs will also increase compared to FY2021, the aforementioned study added that the Brent Crude is expected to be USD 50-60 per barrel on average and that the USD/INR exchange rate is expected to stay in the 73-75 range over the next fiscal year.

In its report on the 'top ten trends to watch in 2021,' CAPA India said, "Airlines will have to carry the costs of a large proportion of their fleet remaining grounded, especially those that were earlier deployed on international routes." The report said that consolidation in the Indian aviation industry is inevitable and could result in a "2-3 airline system" in the near to medium term. "The structure of competition may change in the near to medium term, possibly resulting in a two-horse race in both the airline and airport sectors," it said.

The dollar is expected to strengthen further on the foreign exchange front, causing India's airlines a great deal of pain. This is because lease, maintenance and financing payments are in dollar terms while revenues are in rupee terms. The currency difference would lead to greater cash outflow pressures. It is likely that this burden will continue. 

The recovery in demand, particularly in international traffic, remains uncertain. Airlines will not be profitable in the absence of a complete recovery in higher-yielding sectors such as corporate travel. Unless the government intervenes in the form of sector-specific policy initiatives, lenders and investors will remain wary of the industry (especially airlines). The government, at least for the first half of 2021, might be tempted to retain price floors and caps.

For the near future, foreign flights are likely to continue operating under bubble arrangements rather than under bilateral air service agreements. Airlines have been operating special international flights under air bubble arrangements implemented with around 24 countries since July.

Airlines of the two countries can operate flights between their territories with some restrictions, under a bilateral air bubble arrangement.

 A question that nervous airplane passengers sometimes pose is this: What is the safest airplane seat? The reply: NONE. Since crashes can occur at any location within the aircraft.

Some people assume that the nearer you sit at an emergency exit, the better you are. Unfortunately, that is not completely true. As in any location inside the aircraft, a fire may begin near the emergency exit. And if the emergency exit is jammed, the person sitting closest to it is in the same situation as the person sitting farthest from it.

The risks to one's safety is reduced significantly by one thing above all else, regardless of where the passenger is seated inside the aircraft: by being alert and mindful of one's environment.

Being alert means being vigilant and watchful. Notice where all exits are located. Listen to all the procedures for pre-flight and in-flight. Do not have too much to drink. Use common sense and try not to do something that will affect your own safety, as well as that of others, such as carrying too much baggage, spilling hot drinks, being reckless with sharp-edged items or stuff. Use common sense yet again.

Despite the concerns and misgivings surrounding air travel, airplane accidents are uncommon. But if one happens during the flight, staying calm and not panicking are very important for the passenger. Fear is a disease which is extremely infectious. Had the chaos been contained, many deaths in crashes, including those that occurred on land, may have been avoided. Therefore, take a deep breath in the event of an accident, keep the tone of voice down, and follow the line.

There is no such thing as the plane's most secure seat. But if he or she wishes to, any passenger can still make his or her seat the safest one, wherever he or she is seated. After all, building a sense of security within oneself is a game of the mind.

The Indian aviation industry will receive its newest airline, Flybig, in the first week of 2021, which will commence operations on January 3.

The airline founded by Sanjay Mandavia - a pilot-turned-aviation entrepreneur - will operate three times a week in the initial couple of weeks. "We will later scale up to have five flights a week, from mid-February," CEO Srinivas Rao said.

India's newest airline, Flybig, which obtained a permit from DGCA in December, will have its inaugural flight to Ahmedabad from Indore. The opening time for flying will be one hour and five minutes.

Flybig will connect the Indore-Raipur route to its network starting on January 13. And the airline will begin flying from Ahmedabad to Bhopal from 1 February onwards. The airline will have regular flights serving all three tier-2 cities by the end of March this year.

Even as domestic air traffic continues to increase, the launch of the new airline comes with a drive during the festive season and year-end travel. While the government has increased the ceiling, allowing airlines to use 80% of their capacity now, the expectation is that this will be further eased.

Flybig has an ATR aircraft, and is adding a second one in the process.

The airline, which had received its permit from the DGCA regulator on 14 December, partially began operations on 21 December when it was operating a chartered flight with an aircraft rented from SpiceJet on a wet-lease. To coincide with the Meghalaya government's decision to open the state for tourism, the airline flew from Delhi to Shillong, as domestic travel gradually recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

By serving snacks onboard, but un-bundling other services, the airline would follow a hybrid model.

The October 17 bid to revive Jet Airways was won by a consortium of UAE-based businessman Murari Lal Jalan and London's Kalrock Capital. The airline is expected to start operating by the summer of 2021.

The consortium said it is awaiting NCLT and other regulatory approvals by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, including the reinstatement of slots and bilateral traffic rights (DGCA). Slots are important commodities in the aviation industry, which is the time zone at which a flight can land at the airport, as well as bilateral traffic privileges, the amount of flights that an airline can fly to the city of another country.
